Thank you for your interest in the Texas A&M University Dance Program. The TAMU Dance Program focuses on the health and well-being of the dancer while finding a balance between one’s structural limitations and the aesthetics of dance. Students study anatomy, injury prevention, nutrition, psychological aspects of the dancer, dance research, and proper biomechanical principles of dance technique. Additional coursework includes dance production, dance composition, Pilates, dance history, partnering, improvisation, and dance pedagogy.
Students enrolled in the dance program as undergraduates move on to gain entrance into professional schools to study for careers in physical therapy and dance therapy, attend graduate school for their MFA in dance, become teachers with an anatomical approach to teaching dance technique, and become performers with an understanding on how to dance longer and healthier. We offer three different degree tracks for undergraduate students to choose from. Students enrolled in the B.S. in Dance Science major have 18 hours of electives in the degree to tailor the degree towards their ultimate career goals. Students interested in the medical field can use the 18 hours towards pre-requisites for professional school. Students interested in dancing professionally can use the 18 hours for additional technique classes, choreography classes, improvisation, partnering, and other dance courses. Students interested in teaching will be required to add the SEED minor and can use the 18 hours of electives to enhance their dance or teaching education. Visit our website, pvfa.tamu.edu, for more information about the SEED minor.
The Master of Fine Arts in Dance focuses on individual and collaborative processes in movement practice, choreography, dance research and teaching. Students will develop a focused expertise in choreography and performance with a specialization in technology including motion tracking, projection and other technological advances. The curriculum bridges the role of the performer and choreographer within dance technology for the stage as well as connecting the performer to virtual and augmented realities. The program also has a unique focus on dance wellness and pedagogy. Students can pursue areas of dance wellness such as the connections between dance and psychology, injury prevention, Pilates and conditioning, among other areas of interest. Those interested in teaching in higher education can study pedagogy with a focus on the health and well-being of dancers, including anatomy for dancers, conditioning for dance practice, dance for community and the application of research into studio practice.
