Hello from Carbondale!
Welcome to our BFA program in Musical Theater at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Students in our program follow an immersive course of study on a lovely campus nestled in the beauty of the Shawnee National Forest. The BFA program is housed equally between the School of Music and the Department of Theater. For all intents in purposes, SIUC functions as a conservatory with a clear triple-threat focus very few general education requirements. Our goal is not only to train you in all the aspects of musical theater but also to ensure that you are prepared for the next step of your career once you leave. One way we do that is to keep our class sizes small so that you have the opportunity to perform in as many as 16 mainstage shows while you’re at SIUC.
In addition to the plethora of natural beauty, our university is a two-hour drive from St. Louis, MO and a leisurely train ride of 4.5 hours to Chicago. Both cities provide a panoply of professional and cultural activities for your enjoyment. We also take the mental health of our students very seriously and Saluki Cares, our on-campus mental wellness department provides counseling, financial assistance and many other things. We also meet with our students one-on-one on a regular basis to check-in on them, see how they’re doing, and help in any way we can.
SIU Carbondale attracts students from every state in the country – not to mention every corner of our planet. So, take a moment to learn even more about our program—a program that will provide you with the skills and the inspiration you will need to be your very best YOU!
“The great thing about a small program is that you really feel noticed by every professor. You don’t just blend into the crowd. The quality of SIU’s professors, students and productions are top-tier. My four years with them truly paved the way for my career today.”
-Zoe Jensen, SIU grad now touring the country as Eliza Hamilton in the National tour of Hamilton.
