Audition Overview

The purpose of the audition is to assess training background, technical level, and the potential to complete the degree program at an advanced and/or pre-professional level.

To be placed into the B.F.A. in Dance and the B.F.A. in Dance - Dance Education Concentration, students should have professional quality dance training in both ballet and modern technique, be at the intermediate technical level, and have a fitness level that can withstand rigorous daily work throughout the semester. Other forms of previous dance training are applicable and highly encouraged. The audition includes a modern and ballet technique class with pointe (if you have pointe experience), the performance of a one-minute solo, and submission of this completed audition application.

Dance Experience, Virtual Visit Session, and Individual Visits

CSU Dance Visits are separate events from Dance Major Auditions. The Dance Experience enhances the audition process and is an opportunity for prospective students (high school juniors, seniors, transfer students, and current CSU students) to meet dance faculty and current dance majors. In-person and virtual visit options are available.

No matter if you come to campus or meet with us online, visits include an overview of our dance program, excerpts from our upcoming Dance Concert performed in our dance spaces, and teaching demonstrations by CSU Dance faculty for prospective students to observe or participate in. Prospective students (and parents/guardians) will have an opportunity to ask questions of the faculty and current students during a Q&A session.

  • Applicants attending the in-person/on-campus Dance Experience in November and February will complete their dance major audition interviews during the event.
  • Applicants attending the in-person/on-campus Dance Experience will be able to perform their solo; however, solos should still be included in your application video.
  • Applicants interviewing virtually will schedule a Zoom interview; select your time slot after you submit your dance major program application on this website.
