Welcome - and thanks for your interest in the Department of Music at Drake University! All applicants to the Drake University Department of Music must complete the application and admission process to Drake University. Details are found here.
Applicants are not required to use the Acceptd portal to apply and audition for our department. We strongly prefer on-campus auditions on one of our Audition Days. Complete information on our audition process, along with audition requirements and recommendation forms, is found on our Audition Days page. There is a $30 fee to submit your audition to us via Acceptd.
Registering for one of those two dates is as simple as filling out the online registration form.
There are two circumstances in which you may choose to submit your audition materials via Acceptd. For those students who live beyond a 250-mile radius from our campus, or who are prevented from attending one of the Audition Days due to scheduling or financial constraints, we will accept the audition via Acceptd. Also, students who are planning to attend an on-campus Audition Day (which includes not just the audition, but also sample classes, informational meetings, and performances by Drake faculty and student soloists and ensembles) may submit a preliminary audition in advance of their on-campus audition. This is a great way to get onto our "radar screen," and to begin to connect with your prospective studio teacher. They may opt to provide you with feedback that you can use to refine your upcoming on-campus audition to a higher level, potentially improving your chances in the acceptance and scholarship process.
Whether online or in person, your audition for the Drake University Department of Music serves both as your audition for entrance to the department (whether as a major, minor, or non-major participant), and as your audition for scholarship awards.
Drake music students share in the excitement that comes from working with renowned artists who are committed to excellence. Opportunities abound, enabling students to succeed in their chosen field, whether it’s performance, education, music business, or research.
“The Drake music faculty always prompt students to think critically. My private instructor provides the tools to make these decisions to that I can try and stand out as a professional with a highly personal and well-informed conception of my craft.” ~Paul Virgilio, Cello performance major and Des Moines Symphony Orchestra cellist
Drake offers the best of both worlds: a music department that is large enough to support a vast range of musical activities, but small enough for students to receive highly personalized instruction and individual mentorship. This breadth and depth brings Drake students flexibility in career choices. Graduates of the Drake Department of Music are well-trained and well-rounded musicians who are highly competitive in today’s complex and fluid musical world.
"Drake has helped me not only to develop as a singer, but to become a more complete musician and a better collaborative artist—things that are vital to my current career as a professional choral singer in New York City.” ~Thomas McCarger, Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, 2004
Options are plentiful in Des Moines, Iowa's capital and a lively center for arts, culture, and entertainment as well as business and government. Drake students earn positions in the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra and perform in many other venues in the metro area as well as on campus.
