The Institute for American Musical Theatre (IAMT)

The Institute for American Musical Theatre is pioneering a new approach to performing arts career preparation. Based in New York City and with a faculty comprised entirely of Broadway and industry professionals, we specialize in musical theatre and provide students with both rigorous training and unique insider access to the current entertainment industry.  

Our Professional Training Program is a two-year full time conservatory style program for students 17 years of age and up.  We offer 20 hours of training a week in Acting, Voice, Film/TV, Audition Technique, Song Interpretation, Ballet, Musical Theatre Dance, Jazz/Funk (Commercial), Tap, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Ensemble Singing, MELT Method (body recovery) and more.  Because our faculty are actively working professionals, our students learn how the business really works, from people who are actually DOING it.  And by giving students access to the very best in the industry, they get a jumpstart creating their professional network in New York City.  Masterclasses with casting directors, agents and Broadway artists are a regular and essential part of our students' training.  Our alumni have performed on Broadway, off-Broadway, on national tours, in film/TV, on international cruise ships, on tour with recording artists, in regional theatre and more.

Our Summer Intensive is held every July for students ages 12-19.  It's 2 or 4 weeks of conservatory level training from our Broadway faculty, with a curriculum pulled from our full time program and including masterclasses with agents, casting directors and guest artists. It's a great way to develop your craft and get a sense of what our 2 year program is like. We also offer rising seniors a chance to audition for our full time program at the end of the Summer Intensive, so you may be able to start your senior year knowing where you'll be continuing your training after graduation.

Most importantly, we believe in a positive approach to teaching, not fostering an environment of cutthroat competition, but one of tight knit community, encouragement and support. We celebrate what is unique in each student and help to develop the skills of their individual artistry. What that means is that our students get the best training in the world while building their network and seeking their joy.

Applications for our 2-Year Professional Training Program and the Summer Intensive will open Sept 1. Both programs require physical presence in New York City and involve training every weekday, 9am-430pm, Monday through Friday. The Summer Intensive does offer dorm housing in NYC for those who need it.  Both programs have rolling admissions with no deadline until our spots are filled. We have selective admissions and applications require video auditions to be uploaded.
