Synopsis: May 4th Voices is a piece of Devised theatre based on the collection of the Kent State Shootings Oral History Project. It compiles over 110 interviews of members of the Kent community, KSU faculty, students, alumni, staff, and administrators on campus on May 4, 1970, as well as National Guardsmen, police, hospital personnel, and others whose lives were affected. This play weaves together these voices in order to tell the human story of the shootings and their aftermath.
While the play was written for an ensemble cast of 13, there is no requirement for any specific number of performers of any particular race, gender, or ethnicity.
From the director, JR Simons: "I was a Kent State graduate who grew up in Portage County. I'm a proud parent of a Kent State graduate and another daughter entering Kent State. I'm very passionate about this play for personal reasons. However, it is not just these personal reasons that make this text resonate today. We have an epidemic of gun violence in our world today. Too many people are reaching for their guns as the first choice to deal with issues that upset them rather than considering other options. Today's political environment is eerily similar to that of May 4, 1970, which is considered by many to be the day that the 60's died."
