School of Music faculty regularly perform with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, and numerous other opera, chamber, jazz, and band organizations. Our student and faculty ensembles frequently tour, commission, record, and are featured at national and international conferences, conventions, and professional meetings. Academic admission to the university is separate from the School of Music application and audition process.
- High school seniors should first apply to the university by visiting The Ohio State University Undergraduate Admissions website.
- Transfer students: you may proceed with your School of Music application and apply to the university before May 1 so that your autumn semester grades may be included.
- University application deadlines:
- All incoming freshmen must apply to the university by November 1, 2021, to receive an "Early-Action" decision from the university and be considered for most university merit scholarships.* The university will accept applications from freshmen until February 1, 2022.
- Transfer students, complete your university application by May 1. Please visit Transfer Student Admissions for information on university application deadlines and requirements.
- School of Music application deadlines:
- For the Bachelor of Music (BM), Bachelor of Music Education (BME), Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees, apply by Saturday, January 29, 2022, OR two weeks prior to your chosen audition date, whichever comes first.
- If you are unable to audition on one of our audition days, you have the option of submitting a recorded audition with your application. The deadline to apply and submit a video audition is January 29, 2022 (Except for the BS degree. See below.)
- Bachelor of Science (BS) deadlines are as follows. (Note that if you choose not to submit a musical composition for the Computer Sciences track, then an audition is required.) See BS Degree – Required Application Materials. You are also required to take an audition if you choose to be considered for another music degree, in addition to the BS. You will have an opportunity to indicate that choice on your application.
- If NOT taking a live audition or if submitting a recorded audition — the deadline is Tuesday, February 1, 2022.
- If taking a live audition, the deadline is Saturday, January 29, 2022, OR two weeks prior to your chosen audition date, whichever comes first.
- For the Bachelor of Music (BM), Bachelor of Music Education (BME), Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees, apply by Saturday, January 29, 2022, OR two weeks prior to your chosen audition date, whichever comes first.
- School of Music application fees:
- For all music degree applications, there is a $15 student application fee.
- If you select the virtual audition option on January 22, 2022, there is an additional $30 fee to use the AuditionRoom platform. (See below for more information on the virtual audition option).
* If you apply to the university by the November 1 "Early Action" deadline, we strongly encourage you to choose the December audition date so that your university admissions decision will not be delayed. If you choose the later audition dates, a final decision may not be made on your university application until audition results are available. Relatedly, students applying Early Action and to the B.S. in Music program without audition, may not receive a University Admissions decision until late February.
AUDITION DATES FOR THE 2022-2023 ACADEMIC YEAR:
- Saturday, December 4, 2021 - on campus (no cello on this date)
- Saturday, January 22, 2022 - live virtual, only (Due to rising COVID cases, the on-campus option is no longer available)
- Saturday, February 12, 2022 - on campus
Live Virtual Audition —Virtual auditions will be held via AuditionRoom®, a live virtual platform hosted by Acceptd® where students will experience and engaging "Zoom-style" one-on-one interaction with faculty. Details will be provided to each applicant approximately one week before their audition date.
Percussion or Jazz Drum Set applicants — February 12, 2022 is the preferred audition date for percussion and jazz drum set applicants. If you are unable to attend our in person audition date on February 12 please contact Tanya Sparks (sparks.348@osu.edu) for special instructions or to make arrangements for an individual audition date.
All auditions, whether in person, virtual, or recorded, will receive full and equitable consideration for admission.
