Welcome to University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance
Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program (PPLP)!

The University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) proudly presents the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program (PPLP), an exceptional opportunity for pre-college students to unleash their piano potential. For over 40 years, the PPLP has been a cornerstone in providing rigorous piano instruction while simultaneously training the next generation of piano educators. This unique blend offers students a comprehensive musical education, personalized attention, and a vibrant community designed to foster a lifelong passion for music and proficiency in piano performance.

The PPLP operates as a continuous, year-round study program, catering to students from beginning to advanced levels. Each academic year commences in September and culminates with an annual Spring Recital at the end of April. To ensure consistent progress and skill retention, students are also required to undertake a minimum of six private lessons during the Summer Session, which spans from May to August. The program's foundational dual mission, established in 1983, is to provide robust teacher-training for University of Michigan students pursuing advanced degrees in Piano Pedagogy and Performance, and concurrently to offer high-quality piano lessons to pre-college students within the community.
