Thank you for visiting the Shakespeare Academy @ Stratford's Summer 2020 application page.

Shakespeare Academy @ Stratford is a six-week residential summer theater program that uniquely combines rigorous training, ensemble collaboration, and the opportunity to rehearse and perform two Shakespeare plays in repertory.

Each year we select a fourteen-member ensemble from around the U.S and abroad to train and perform together on the property that once housed the legendary American Shakespeare Festival Theater in Stratford, CT.

Designed for students currently attending college, or students who have finished high school and/or recent college graduates, our program seeks a diverse ensemble from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Past students have traveled from as nearby as Connecticut and as far as Florida, Texas, California, Europe, and Asia.

Prior training and/or experience in theater or Shakespeare are not a requirement. Rather, we look for evidence of the applicant's desire to create, a strong imagination, and readiness to jump in, contribute, and take risks as part of a collaborative ensemble.

In 2020, Artistic Director Sara Holdren will direct Troilus and Cressida, and visiting director Benjamin Curns will direct As You Like It. At the conclusion of the program, both plays are performed in repertory in a ten-day festival. The program dates are June 18th-August 3rd. All students will perform in both productions and rehearse and train intensively as part of the repertory company.

Tuition to attend Shakespeare Academy @ Stratford is $3900 and includes training with masterclass teachers from the country's top-ranked drama institutions, housing for the entire six weeks of the program, bi-weekly communal meals, and special field trips. Other food, travel, and personal expenses during the summer are the responsibility of the student. Interested in applying, but need financial assistance? The Quinn Rooney Shakespeare Scholarships are need-based tuition scholarships awarded by the Mighty Quinn Foundation. Scholarship applicants should complete the optional scholarship section of the program application, which will ask for written responses and a statement of financial need.

A Special Message Regarding SA@S and COVID-19:

Dear applicants,

We’re so excited that you're here, applying for Summer 2020 at Shakespeare Academy @ Stratford, and, at this strange and out of joint time, we'd like to share with you a message regarding the global health crisis we’re all currently weathering. First, we hope that wherever you are, you are well and safe. Next, we want to assure you that, here at SA@S, we’re doing what there is to do: We’re working remotely, monitoring the situation, and washing our hands like we’re Lady Macbeth.

Our hearts go out to all those most affected by COVID-19, and also to the artists and theater-makers out there, whose work so depends on community, on the ability to gather together and share in story, empathy, and revelation. We look forward to what we hope and trust is a near future time when artists and audiences can again meet freely to share in the wonderful work and play that is theater — and we want to let you know that at this point, we are still planning on a summer of magic and mayhem (the good kind!) here in Stratford.

At this time, applications for the Summer 2020 Ensemble are still very much OPEN (right here! You found 'em!) and we are thrilled to receive them. We will continue to be in touch in the coming days and weeks, and will inform you as soon as we can in the event of any changes. If you have questions or need to get in touch, we are always available at

Stay safe, stay hopeful, stay strong. “Have patience, and endure.” Thank you for your love of the arts, your support of theater and theater education, and your faith in the future. We believe in it, in us, in art, and in you.

The Staff of SA@S
