Adjudication Process

Adjudicators evaluate how each participating high school musical meets or exceeds its potential, utilizing its available resources. Each musical is evaluated and scored against itself for consideration, rather than against all other school productions, charging schools to create the best possible work in their unique circumstance and environment. The Adjudication Evaluative Scoring Tool is used by adjudicators to determine how each school measures against the standards of excellence across the criteria of each category.

Each school receives its scores with full commentary for each adjudicated category in the months following the Awards Ceremony. This feedback is intended to serve as an educational tool for directors and students, not strictly a review or critique. It is up to the discretion of the director to share these reports with their students, creative staff, or administration.

Eligibility

The Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards Program – The Shuler Hensley Awards® is a Regional Awards Representative for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards – The Jimmy Awards. All musicals considered for the GHSMTAs must be eligible based on the NHSMTA Qualifying Shows and Roles list. For questions regarding your show’s eligibility, please contact Elizabeth Lenhart at elenhart@artsbridgega.org.

Only high school students (grades 9-12) registered at a participating high school or homeschool organization, and faculty members employed by the participating high school, or middle/elementary school students/faculty that feeds to the participating high school (full or part-time) are eligible for individual categories. Only awards-eligible registered high school students are considered for the acting award categories.

Guest artists, parents, volunteers, K-8 students, homeschool students, or anyone other than awards-eligible students and faculty do not qualify for individual category awards. However, every applicant will be evaluated and scored, regardless of eligibility. Every school will be considered for the Overall Production category.

NOTE: Homeschool organizations are only eligible for the following individual acting categories: Supporting Performer and Featured Performer.

The Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards encourage participating schools to use readily available school resources, faculty, and students. The use of a person (e.g. professional/guest artist) other than a full-time, high school faculty member and/or registered student in grades 9-12 will automatically disqualify the school from that category; however, all categories deemed ineligible are given the opportunity to submit an appeal to the Shuler Advisory Committee for further consideration and possible overruling.
