Valdosta State University offers a BFA degree in Theatre (Musical Theatre, Performance, Production, Theatre Management) and a BFA degree in Dance. There are currently 128 majors in Theatre within Musical Theatre, Performance, Production, and Theatre Management, and 32 majors in Dance.
Valdosta State University is delighted to offer an automatic Out of State Fee Waiver for Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, North, and South Carolina residents.
Valdosta State University has a liberal arts core curriculum as well as highly specific courses in the student’s specific area of study. Students have the ability to take elective classes outside of their field which might include Stage Combat, Aerial Silks in the dance area, Acting for the Camera, Stage Dialects, Period Styles of Acting, etc. to enhance their marketable skills.
We have a Professional Connections program that includes Master Classes taught by professionals in the field on campus and there are biennial trips to major theatrical centers in the country. The last several trips have been to New York City. Workshops and mock audition situations as well as alumni connections are the focus of these trips, as well as seeing Broadway productions. In addition, backstage tours and Q&A sessions with professionals are set up for our production and Theatre Management students. Our workshops have been coordinated by Rachel Hoffman, casting director at Telsey & Co. Workshop leaders have been agents, choreographers, and casting directors for both film and theatre.
We hold a Showcase for seniors in April on campus. Casting directors, Artistic Directors, and agents are in attendance. We have representatives from New York, Atlanta, Disney, Tampa/St. Pete and Orlando to observe the showcase. A question and answer session follows the formal presentation.
Valdosta State University produces Peach State Summer Theatre, the Official Musical Theatre of the State of Georgia. Three musicals are presented each season in rotating repertory. Over seventy company members are hired each season, including two Equity guest artists. Musical Theatre, Performance, and Dance students have the opportunity to audition for the season and many of our VSU theatre grads have at least one professional credit on their resumes from PSST! Production and Theatre Management students also have opportunities with Peach State Summer Theatre and are hired through an interview process.
The total full-time faculty in the theatre and dance programs is 11. There are eight full-time faculty in theatre and three full-time faculty in dance.
